Tamil Tigers accused of hushing up case

JAFFNA, Sept 11: The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam are hushing up a child rape case involving a key supporter, human rights officials alleged on Sunday.

K.T. Ganesalingam, a university lecturer and spokesperson for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam’s international student organization, was arrested on a charge of assaulting a 12-year-old girl working in his house as servant.

“We learn there is pressure on the father of the child by pro-LTTE big wigs to drop the case. The child has been raped repeatedly over a period of six months,” a member of the Jaffna Human Rights Commission said.

The court has rejected Mr Ganesalingam’s bail plea.

The child, at present in the protection of UNICEF, revealed her plight when she was hospitalized two weeks ago after trying to commit suicide.
