LAHORE: The police higher-ups ordered an inquiry into the death of a suspect in the custody of the Liaquatabad police station here on Friday.

Identified as Sarfraz, the suspect was arrested in a drug-selling case and the family alleged that he was subjected to torture by the police which led to his death in custody.

The parents of the deceased further told media persons that they had already told the policemen investigating him that he was a heart patient and any physical abuse could take his life.

ASP Asif Bahadar denied torture of the suspect and said the family had hurled allegations just on the basis of assumptions. He said the police had provided clips of CCTV installed in the lock-up that showed that he suffered heart attack which proved fatal.

The postmortem report also confirmed no torture mark on any part of his body, he said, adding that the family had been provided evidence. He said an inquiry was also under way.
