Women urged not to desert party

Published September 5, 2005

SWABI, Sept 4: Women councillors should stick to party discipline and avoid selling their votes in the district and tehsil councils’ election. The observation was made by speakers at the first district-level women councillors’ convention, organized by the Awami National Party at the residence of Dr Yasmeen Jaseem on Sunday.

The provincial leaders of the ANP women wing and councillors attended the convention, aimed at making preparation for district nazim election. ANP leader Zahira Khattak said that selling of votes in the coming elections was a problem in the whole province but those who desired to maintain their ‘dignity’ would never compromise on principles.

She said that the alliances made after the elections were temporary in nature and the ANP leadership would never compromise on the party norms.

“No one will fight for your rights. You have to struggle for your rights and for achieving your due place in our society,” she told the councillors.

She said that the ANP has planned to hold an international women convention in November in Peshawar and the preparations and contacts with renowned international women activists were underway.
