PLYMOUTH: Mr. Emmanuel Shinwell, prominent Labour Member of Parliament declared… that… the Labour Party would decline to associate with the Tories when the European war was over.

“We are not going to walk into Mr. Churchill’s parlour in order to make a tasty dish for the Tory Party. Why should the Labour accept Mr. Churchill’s offer when we have a great opportunity of gaining a clear majority at the next election? Mr. Churchill is fond of [making] insulting references to other people, but if anyone dares criticise him, however mildly, he is as temperamental as a prima donna. The Prime Minister indulged in cheap sneer about Left wing promises. But what about his four-year plan… which his near relation, Mr. Duncan Sandys, has no means of carrying into effect? When the next election comes, Mr. Churchill’s political future will be decided not by his glamour and oratory as a war leader, but his record before the war and in particular, his association with a party whose primary purpose is a return to unlimited private enterprise which they pretend means more liberty, but which means the right of a few to rob the rest of the community.”
