KOHAT: The director earth and water management department, Tayyab Khan Khattak, has said that surveys are being conducted to construct check dams in mainly mountainous areas of Kohat to control damage to the standing crops during rains.

Speaking at a one-day workshop for the staff and farmers, he said that a project was also underway to identify the crops suitable for Kohat to gain more production and introduce new crop varieties.

Mr Khattak and former director retired Col Iftikhar Shinwari, who also spoke on the occasion, said that the government had allocated Rs13 billion for all the districts of the province under the agriculture emergency project for constructing small dams to check floods and use the water for irrigation purpose.

They said the dams would recharge the soil which would raise the water level.
