KOHAT: The students of software engineering presented their research projects at the 2020 ideas exhibition held at the Kohat University of Science and Technology on Wednesday.

Vice-Chancellor Dr Jameel Ahmed visited the stalls where students briefed him about their ideas.

Mohammad Hashim, a student, told the VC through his panaflex display that he had proposed the idea of ‘MNIST Digit Classification’ through which a whole book could be transferred to a computer via scan instead of spending hours on composing it.

He said the idea would help publication outlets and other departments.

Similarly, student Danyal Farman suggested ‘KUST Chat BOT’ to provide all information about the university.

Student Awazan said his ‘Driver Drowziness System’ would start an alarm before a computer went into sleep mode.

In all, 28 ideas were presented.

Dr Ahmed said the students could ask the private sector to help them purchase hardware for promoting their ideas.

He said the federal government had launched IGNITE strategy with grassroots level fund for research-based programmes.

He said research and development centre launched during retired Gen Pervez Musharraf’s era had been renamed as IGNITE.

The vice-chancellor said the 12 scholarships launched by the government for the varsity would help the poor students in their projects.

He said the varsity could also provide assistance to the students and involve the private companies in their endeavours.

He requested adviser to the chief minister on information and technology, MPA Ziaullah Bangash for funding for the research-based ideas to encourage research.

TREE PLANTATION: The Kohat University of Science and Technology and Water Supply and Sanitation Company launched a tree plantation campaign with the assistance of a local cement company on Wednesday.

Varsity’s pro-vice chancellor Dr Tasleem Hussain planted a sapling in one of the gardens of the campus. Speaking on the occasion, he said people should actively participate in the tree plantation drive.

He said they had been given the task of planting 4,000 trees at the campus.

WSSC operation manager Naeem Ahmed said they would plant 600 saplings along the greenbelt near the Gate No 2 of the KDA Township.
