THE Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s election promise of constructing five million homes for the poor is yet to materialise.

Since coming to power, the PTI government has not built a single home while on the other hand the top party leadership has vowed to privatise House Building Finance Company, the only low-cost housing finance institution of the country that was set up by the federal government in 1952. The prime minister should know that since its inception, the HBFC has helped finance the construction of millions of houses and apartments all over the country. The government should revisit the decision of privatising an entity that has provided tremendous support to efforts to provide housing and shelter to millions of Pakistanis.
