KARACHI: Rich tributes were paid to the martyrs of Liaquatabad, who were killed by wanton firing by a procession taken out on Jan 4, 1965 to celebrate the victory of Mr Ayub Khan, at a meeting held last night [Jan 4] by the Karachi Zonal Council Muslim League. The speakers at the meeting said that the names of these persons would go down in the history of Pakistan as ‘great champions of democracy’, and by laying down their lives they paved the way for the downfall of President Ayub Khan’s dictatorial regime.

The meeting was presided over by Princess Abida Sultan and was addressed by Mr Z.H. Lari, Mr Hasan A. Shaikh, Maulana Ibne Hasan Jarchvi, Mr Ismail Burhani and Nawab Zahid Ali Khan.

Mr Hasan A. Shaikh, addressing the meeting, cautioned people about internal enemies of Pakistan. He said that those political parties or persons who opposed Pakistan and its ideology, were now gathering their forces to disintegrate Pakistan, and people should remain on their guard about these parties and persons. Pakistan, he said, was established for the safeguard of Islamic values and not for the people of any particular provinces. Pakistan could be stronger only if the Islamic values were practised truly and the country was administered in accordance with Islam, he said. — Agency
