Army lead with whopping 44 gold medals at National Games

PESHAWAR: Pakistan Army reached a whopping 44 gold medals while Wapda followed with 26 golds to their name at the 33rd National Games on Tuesday. Navy were third with 11 gold medals.

Jaffar Ashraf won Army a gold when he hit the 4.50m mark with team-mate Gul Faraz making the silver medal by scaling 4.40m. Mohammad Asif of Pakistna Airforce managed to take home the bronze medal.

Wapda added to their tally of gold medals courtesy Sohail Amir, who completed the men’s 10,000m run in 31.05.86 with Army’s Atiq-ur-Rehman following for the second place and Navy’s Ali Hassan finishing third.

In women’s long jump Maria Maratab of Army by leaping 4.96m, took gold followed by Faiqa Riaz of Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Amna Siraj of Wapda.

In women’s shot put Zeenat Parveen of Wapda took gold medal by throwing as long as 11.72m while Rimsha Khan of Wapda, with a 10.58m throw, won the silver medal. Army’s Nabeela Kausar grabbed bronze medal courtesy a 10.07m throw.

In women’s 800m Anila Gulzar of Army took gold medal while Rabia Ashiq of Wapda ended second and Rabeela Farooq, also of Army, took bronze.

Olympian Mehboob Ali took gold in the men’s 400m hurdles while Nishad Bhatti and Mohammad Adeel of Wapda finished second and third. In the women’s 400m Najma Perveez won her fourth gold medal, Musarat Shaheen took silver and Tehreem Alam of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa managed to win the bronze medal.

In women’s high jump Hubab Munir won gold medal, followed Noureen Fatima of Wapda and Maria Maratab of Army.

Mohammad Ikram of Army took gold in the men’s 800m while Waqas Akbar and Zeeshan Nazir finished second and third respectively.

In the rowing event, which is being held at the Rawal Lake in Rawalpindi, Pakistan Army won 10 gold medals, 12 silver and one bronze medal, Wapda claimed eight gold medals, six silver medals while Railways won two gold medals, three silver and 14 bronze medals. Navy grabbed three golds and two silvers.

KIRAN GRABS TWO GOLDS

Olympian Kiran Khan of Army grabbed two gold medals in the swimming events at the Jinnah Sports Complex. Kiran finished on top in the 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle events.

Kiran’s triumphs contributed to Army’s 143.5 points in women’s swimming on Tuesday with the department winning three more golds medals while Wapda, with two gold medals, four silver medals and three bronze medals have 113 points. Sindh with one silver medal and four bronze medals are on third with 59 points.

In the men’s swimming events too Army are dominating with a huge 212 points thanks to seven gold, two silver and one bronze medal. Wapda, with 90 points are second while Sindh and Punjab are third and fourth respectively.

Haseeb Tariq won the 200m backstroke while Azhar of Army clinched gold in the 200m butterfly.

In the women’s 400m medley Mishael Hayat of Wapda won the gold medal while in the 100m freestyle Army’s Bisma won gold. In the 4x100 relay Army were triumphant.

In other events, Army and Navy moved to the men’s kabaddi final by beating Pakistan Air Force 48-44 and Punjab 31-11 respectively. In the fourth place match Wapda beat KP 43-23.

Sindh, Police, KP and Balochistan moved to the throwball semi-finals while Army and KP made it to the last four of the hockey event.

In women’s basketball Army beat Balochistan 92-03 while Wapda downed KP 108-15. In the men’s event Army beat KP 114-49 while Punjab beat Railways 119-80. Wapda were the victors against Balochistan who were beaten 115-23. In the day’s last match PAF beat Sindh 116-63.

In squash KP, Navy, Punjab and Railways booked their semi-finals berth.

SINDH BAG BRONZE IN THROWBALL EVENT

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan throwball teams defeated Police and Sindh, respectively to reach the final of the event at the 33rd National Games here on Tuesday. The final will be played on Nov 15.

KPK outplayed Police 2-0 while Balochistan edged past Sindh by 2-1. In the third position match, Sindh beat Police 2-0 to clinch a bronze medal.

Mrs Akhter Khan, President Balochistan Throwball Association, was the chief guest in the first semi-final while Ume Laila Kalsoom, General Secretary Pakistan Rocball Federation, was the chief guest in second semi-final.

Meanwhile, the women’s throwball event will start here on Wednesday (today) at University of Peshawar.

Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan and Culligan will compete in the event.
