SANTIAGO (Chile): The Chilean Government announced today [Oct 21] that an army regiment in the capital had mutinied and appealed to the people to defeat what is said was an attempt at a coup d’etat.

In an official communique, the Government of President Eduardo Frei Montalva said the [Tacna] regiment in Santiago rose up early this morning, and that the Army high command was acting to put down the mutiny. — Agency

[Meanwhile, as reported by agencies in Beirut,] Lebanese troops shelled Arab guerrillas holed up in a border village early today [Oct 21] killing five and taking the rest prisoners, the guerrilla command reported. Four Lebanese civilians also died in the four-hour battle for the village of Mekdel Selm, just a few miles north of the Israeli frontier, announced the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO). A PLO spokesman said the guerrillas, surrounded for several days in two other nearby villages, have broken through encircling Lebanese army positions and escaped to the hills. The reported clashes coincided with charges by the guerrillas on Monday that a concerted bid to crush them was shaping up in Jordan and Lebanon as a prelude to Middle East “peace” talks.
