PESHAWAR, Aug 3: An Afghan banker has returned $30,000 to the Afghan Consulate here and promised to return the same amount in near future, which he had stolen from a bank in Balkh province in the northern Afghanistan, sources told Dawn here on Wednesday.
Mohammad Siddique, a resident of Laghman province of Afghanistan, spent $30,000 on celebrating his second marriage at the age of 40 after stealing $60,000 from Hirattan town branch of Da Afghanistan Bank two months ago, the sources said. But soon after stealing the money, he suffered kidney failure, which created a sense of guilt.
On Tuesday, he returned $30,000 to the Afghan Counsel General Abdul Khaliq Farahi here and promised to return the remaining amount after his kidney treatment. The sources added that Mr Siddique after stealing the money escaped to the Jalozai refugee camp in the outskirts of Peshawar.
He spend the money on second marriage and his treatment and gave some money to his poor relatives. But when his condition deteriorated, he contacted Jalozai camp commander Dost Mohammad and disclosed that he had stolen the money.
The Afghan Consulate here was already informed by the authorities of the central bank of Afghanistan about robbery. Dost Mohammad on the consent of Mr Siddique informed the Afghan Consulate and on Tuesday returned the money. Mr Farahi, owing to the poor health of Mr Siddique, did not arrest him and allowed him to carry on with his kidney treatment.
ARREST: The city police have arrested a man who hijacked a taxi car after killing Afghan driver on the Ring Road here, said an official statement.
On Tuesday, accused Adnan Sohail, a resident of Pattoki town of Kasur district, hired a taxi from the railway station and asked him to go to a house on the Ring Road. When the taxi reached near Jameel intersection near Bara Khwar area, the accused pulled out his pistol and killed the driver, Mulla Jan, a resident of Khazana refugee camp in Daudzai area.
People of the area soon after the killing informed the police, who mounted a vigil on the city roads and the Hayatabad police stopped the taxi at Industrial Estate checkpoint. The police arrested Adnan Sohail and seized a 30-bore pistol from his possession.
