“I am from Swabi and have five sisters and one brother. One of my sisters and me are disabled. I studied till 4th grade but had to drop out because I could not walk to school which was located quite far from my home. For many years, I lazed around, doing nothing. My father was a labourer in Islamabad. Due to my disability, he could not find me work.

My parents approached many doctors for my treatment. They even brought me to Pims but after the doctors said that I would have to be operated upon, my father backed out.

In 2010, I went to Karachi for work. We had some acquaintances there who found me work at a factory that produced thread. I worked in the factory for three months but had to leave work as I found it hard. I applied at a number of places but again my disability was an obstacle. Having no choice, I returned to Swabi.

After staying in my hometown for a few months, I came to Islamabad.

With the amount I had saved in Karachi and a little help from my father, I bought toys and started selling them. It has been eight years now.

I earn between Rs300 to Rs500 per day. There are many people who just give me money and do not buy the toys.

I purchase toys from Raja Bazaar in Rawalpindi. I come to Jinnah Super at 10am and stay here till 9pm.

A family has provided me a room in their house which is close to Jinnah Super. It was not less than a blessing as I don’t know how I would have afforded accommodation.

I got married three years ago and my wife lives with my family in Swabi. My father and brother are the main bread-earners of the family. One of my brothers separated after he got married. I go to Swabi after every 15 days and give whatever amount I have saved to my father.

My disability had restricted my options for work. I just hope that I have enough money to open my own shop. At least I will be able to earn a decent living and provide for my family.”
