TRDP: A programme to identify the problems and solutions of the inhabitants of the arid zone was organized here at the Girls Degree College by an NGO, Tharparkar Rural Development Programme (TRDP), in collaboration with the Action Aid, to identify the problems and solutions of the inhabitants of the arid zones.

Speaking as chief guest and speaker of the Peoples’ Assembly, Dr Sono Khangharani, executive director TRDP, said the purpose of organising such a gathering was to provide an opportunity to the dwellers of the under-developed arid region, to vent to their grievances at this forum.

He said no NGO can become a substitute to government, but it can play the role of bridging the gap between the government and the masses.

Active participation of community people of various areas in policy making as well as in monitoring and implementing the development projects can help a lot in uplift of the under-developed regions of the country.

Dr Sono urged the masses to become supporters of democracy and to bring forward honest individuals and institutes, which can serve them in the best possible way. Speaking on the occasion, Arbab Nek Mohammad, pointed out that as the governments of India and Pakistan are apparently trying to promote bilateral relations and Khokhropar route was going to be reopened in the near future, the government of Pakistan should accord permission for the import of such merchandise from Sindh border, as had been allowed through Wagha border.

The assembly passed a unanimous resolution supporting this proposal. This programme was widely attended by representatives of NGOs working in Kachho, Achhro Thar, Naro, besides social workers, elites, educationists, officials and a large number of women who complained about lack of educational, healthcare, water supply and other basic amenities in their respective areas.

Among others, Haji Mohammad Dal, Adam Malik, Dr Rubi Dharamdas, Abid Channa, EDO Juman Shah, Ramzan Junejo and Haji Nabi Bux Wasayopoto also spoke on the occasion.
