Growers want interest-free loan

Published January 15, 2002

MITHI, Jan 14: The growers of Thar have appealed to President Gen Pervez Musharraf, governor, Sindh, and chairman, Agriculture Development Bank, to grant free of interest loan to the tenants of district Tharparkar, and postpone the recovery of the loans.

Talking to Dawn here on Sunday, Ali Muhammad Nohri, Kachho Thakur, councillor Tilokchand and other peasants pointed out that majority of the Tharis had lost or spent their assets, including cattle, farm land, ornaments, houses, to meet the expenses required to make the both ends meet during the past dry and harsh years, consequently they were lacking resources to pay the instalments of the agricultural loan.

They said that the district council as well as the four taluka councils had already passed resolutions at their sessions and demanded of the government to launch rural micro credit programme for creating income generating activities.
