PESHAWAR: A cop was martyred and another was wounded critically when unidentified assailants opened fire on a rider patrol in the limits of the Pahari Pura police station here on Thursday night.

A police official said the incident took place near Sultan Colony when unidentified motorcyclists opened fire on the rider patrol. He said constable Iftikhar Ahmed embraced martyrdom while constable Sultan was critically injured in the firing.

The official said when the cops signaled two persons riding a motorcycle to stop, they opened fire on the personnel and sped away.

The official said when the cops started chasing the attackers they again fired at the personnel, injuring both of them. One of the cops later succumbed to injuries at hospital.

The funeral prayers of the constable were offered at the Malik Saad Shaheed police lines and were attended by provincial police chief Dr Mohammad Naeem Khan, city police chief Mohammad Karim Khan and other officials.
