KARACHI: A young married woman has lost an eye in an acid attack allegedly carried out by her husband in a Clifton locality. However, despite the passage of more than two weeks since the incident, the police had failed to arrest her husband, who reportedly had fled to Punjab, it emerged on Friday.

Ms Ruqaya, 25, mother of two minor children, had suffered burn wounds on her face and other parts of her body in the acid attack carried out by her husband Imran in Shah Rasool Colony on July 9.

“She has lost one eye in the acid attack,” said South SSP Sheeraz Nazeer.

The senior officer added that the woman who got admitted to the Burns Centre of the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi had suffered more than 50 per cent burn wounds.

The Boat Basin police have registered an FIR (407/2019) against the suspect, Imran, on the complaint of the victim’s brother, Asghar Rafiq.

Subsequently, the case was referred to the investigation wing of the police.

According to contents of the FIR, Ms Ruqaya was asleep inside her home on July 9 when her husband started beating her at around 7am.

Other family members tried to prevent the suspect from doing so.

The woman went out in the street, but the suspect chased her and threw acid on her.

As a result, her face and other parts of the body were badly burnt.

The police said that the suspect had escaped to his native place in Punjab and shut his mobile phone.
