5 takeaways from Pakistan's disastrous ─ but predictable ─ World Cup defeat to India

Pakistan's record of losing to arch rivals India in World Cup cricket remained unblemished when the latter thrashed the green shirts by 89 runs off the Duckworth Lewis method in their encounter in Manchester on Sunday.

Here are five takeaways from yesterday's game:

1. Not painful anymore

This wasn’t painful. It was painful in 2015, 2011, 2003, 1999, 1996 and before that.

We have long been numbed by Pakistan team’s continued failures in the face of expectations against this specific opponent. It’s almost routine now.

That’s probably as nice a spin as anyone can put on the situation. It’s sad that a proud cricketing nation has been reduced to this.

2. Bat first, bat last, or don’t bat at all

It wouldn’t have mattered or made a difference.

This was boys against men; this was professional athletes of the 21st century versus 'raillu kattas' and parchis of the previous millennium.

Whatever the reason, the Pakistan cricket team has remained at a standstill while other top teams have progressed and evolved.

3. Pakistan is no stranger to post-World Cup purges

It will happen again ─ as it should ─ but not just to pacify angry fans.

The system needs upgrading. Athletes need to align themselves with modern-day standards, and for that to happen, the troglodytes running the show need to go.

The back-in-our-days approach needs to make way for a more scientific one where fitness, athleticism and mental fortitude are at the forefront.

It's easier said than done with Pakistan cricket, of course.

4. The specifics

The captain is pudgy, the coach is clueless, the chief selector is archaic, the bowlers are wayward, the batsmen are mentally weak and the fielders... Well they are Pakistani.

This bunch can be relied on to be flat-track bullies, or to cause an upset or two once in a blue moon, but when pitted against top-notch sides, it's no surprise that they get thrashed.

5. This isn't just about cricket

Zoom out and observe Pakistan cricket as a microcosm of the entire country.

You'll find that this team is not operating any different than anyone or anything else.

What the Pakistan team is, is what we are. And what we are, is the Pakistan team.

One doesn't change without the other.

I don’t understand this boundless capacity that Pakistanis have for self flagellation. If Virat had played that ball onto his stumps early in his innings, this could have gone a different way. The Indian team is calmer and more focused but that might be because the Pakistani team is always under the microscope and subject to incredible expectations with no room to breathe. Remember this was the same team that beat England a few days ago.

If state of a country`s economy and achievements is reflected in the outcome of a cricket match then ENGLAND should be winning every final, not only in Cricket but also Football and yet they have done neither in either sport. Pakistan have lost matches to India in World cups even when PAK team was rated no 1 or 2. Why have Sri Lanka and South Africa fared as badly as Pakistan in this tournament if PAK is the only team with outdated methods.

Mercurial Pakistan, it was after a very well played match against England. Since then things have not been consistent barring one or two individual bowlers. If the players do not strive for consistency, then its more or less a coin-toss outcome and the chance of a win becomes a multi-varied possibility. Consistency comes from discipline, from captain/team/management/staff all included.

I did not watch the match as I knew what is going to happen, if you have expectation with the team and PCB you are living in fool's paradise. No one can explain why they did not filed full strength team against Australia in last series. Things started to go bad from there. Can any one explain to me why PCB did that, Australian team was looking for the right combination for the WC. It is still mystery to me or any one who follows cricket. After that every thing was downhill. A problem was created by the board, it was not there when they played against SA in SA. My personal thinking is that PCB and selectors were not serious about doing good in WC. I also agrees that team reflects us (Pakistan).

@Zincalala, Problem is the unpredictable tag is lame excuse for inconsistent performance. Once in a while it may work like CT17 but majority of times you lost to consistent teams like England ,Australia etc..Expecting too much from such team is not beneficial infact its pushing the team under pressure when PM himself tweets.Its just a game and dont attach emotions to it. Breaking TVs and abusing players shows how irrational people are.

From talent perspective, I think we still have a very good team, it is just the professionalism culture that we need to bring to this team on how to handle pressure and not to lose the wickets at the wrong time of the match (we did the same against Australia too) and add the killer instinct in the bowlers to take wickets and not focus on controlling the run rate. About time we should change the coaching staff (Micky Arthur, Grant Flower and Azhar Mahmood) and selection committee head Inzimam should also be removed as he has too much influence in the team tactics and also have the right players selected in the squad and lastly give more power to the captain so that he can lead with authority and be aggressive in the limited overs cricket and not just wait and watch approach that we developed under Misbah which worked well in tests but limited overs cricket has evolved and we should also adapt accordingly.

Decision to bowl first was absolutely correct considering the weather forecast. The fact is that the team is conspiring against Sarfaraz Ahmed. Shoaib Malik, Imad Wasim, Baber Azam, Imam Ul Haq, Asif Ali and Hassan Ali have formed a group under the supervision of Inzimam Ul Haq they are absolutley against Sarfaraz and are systematically sabotaging the team. The script has already been written to remove Sarfraz after the World Cup. Prime Minister Imran Khan should take immediate notice. Sarfaraz Ahmed is the best thing that has happened to Pakistan cricket in the past few years. Former honest cricketers like Rashid Latif and Basit Ali should come forward and help out Sarfaraz as the conspiracy against him unfolds.

Discipline in between matches is enforced by all world class teams on international and regional match series in specific. Bigger the events, more strict controls and lights out timings are followed even on days with no matches. That's my understanding from observations and few interactions. Why can't we stop partying during matches of these types are least....

Pakistan team work on instinct while great teams like Australia, New Zealand, England, India use scientific analysis and have mental toughness. This comes with education. If you compare players in Pakistan team to other teams I mentioned above, you will find out that most of the players in Australia, New Zealand, England, India are educated. Pakistan as a country wasn't a super power in 80s or 90s when we had an amazing cricket team. So comparisons of state of the team with the state of the nation, while made sincerely, are not logical. Reality is that sports teams go up or down from generation to generation. India post kapil dev era was a mediocre team till tendulkar and Davis emerged. England and Newzealand went through almost 2 decades of mediocrity from early 90s to late 2000s. Sri Lanka and west indies have fallen from the peaks they achieved many years ago. This up and down will continue happens in every sports. Once mighty Manchester United has bevome a mediocre club now. Pakistan team is right now on downhill curve but you never know it might completely change with induction of just a few good players.

I don't think a particular game matters - It happened to be all world cup matches. Pakistan's win rate over India's is still higher. Individuals are highly talented and have worked hard to reach the stage to play international cricket and that is not easy. If Rohit was out early & virat had gone out early, the match would have been very different. We all know DL method is too partial for the team that plays second. Pakistan is a great team and have produced some of the best talents in the cricketing world. All these remarks against the Pakistan team would be very different if the result was otherwise. It would not be right to pass judgement based on this match.

To all Pakistani cricket fans....please also remember that when we Indians batted luck favoured us many times, and it did not favoured a single time with pakistai batsman 1) It favoured twice with Rohit when an inside edge went to boundry line instead hitting stumps (not to forget his missed run out when ball was thrown at the wrong end) 2) Unluckily for Shoaib & Sarafarz the inside edge hit stumps.... so not their fault I can say 3) Also guys please dont blame Sarfarz for his decision of choosing to bowl as the conditions were rainy and in these conditions the team batting second always have an advantage.

Had Pakistan won match yesterday, same author would have praised this mediocre team as resurgent, most talented team... Tske it easy, It's just a game where one team team has to lose or win. Living in Australia, my Indian colleague put it very aptly. Pakistan's strength was bowling and India's strength was always their batting. While India has improved their batting even after the retirements of legends like Tendulkar, Sehwag, Dravid and Ganguly, they have also greatly improved their bowling and fielding and have become a more efficient unit. Pakistan, on the other hand, have just deteriorated, both in bowling and batting, after their greats have retired from the game. They keep coming up with new fast bowlers, but they are mostly just fast bowlers not having any skills in seam and swing like their predecessors. And Pakistan has got no world class batsman except Babar.

At this moment, all Indian trolls who were planning to troll Pakistani players, are taken aback by the level and harshness of trolling Pakistani players are subjected to by Pakistani trolls. Some of the comment do not even qualify as trolls; they are plain threats. I suggest Pakistani team stays in England for a month or two even after the World Cup is over.

Problem is pakistan not ready to accept the reality that they dont have talents like they use to have in the past ...people are praising Aamir but he got all his wicket when Batsmen were trying to hit him.in bowler-friendly conditions we have seen Asia cup how he gets hammered in batting friendly conditions .pakistan needs to get rid of all senior players including Sarfaraz .as responsibility lies on them to guide the team and youngsters

PCB don't have money for better facilities, other teams are not willing to go to Pakistan to play, India stopped playing with pak, pak players are not allowed in IPL and so on. Why?? Why visiting srilanka team was shot??. The reason for all problems facing Pakistan is just same. It is just one reason. Nobody has the guts to accept and acknowledge it.

5 Points should be considered. 1- Stop drinking Tea (nicotine is bad for brain performance). Whole nation is getting sleepy because of tea. 2- No coaches required for Pakistan team. Leave decisions for Captain to bat or ball. 3- PCB create Bowling academy and appoint all coaches there. 4- PCB create Batting academy and appoint all coaches there. 5- Only physiotherapist and doctors should be with team.
