I would like to discuss the orders issued by the Sindh culture department for the closure of the Mohenjo Daro ruins and museum during Eid holidays for the general public from June 4 to June 7 in the wake of possible damages by visitors to fragile structural ruins.

Where are people to go? Not everyone wants to stay in the city and meet relatives. Some people like to use long weekends to travel and what’s better than a trip to a historical site like the hub of the Indus Valley Civilisation!

It shocks me that the public was deprived of recreational facilities during Eid holidays.

According to Unesco, Mohenjo Daro was declared a world heritage site in 1980. The website adds: “The ruins of the huge city of Moenjodaro — built entirely of unbaked brick in the 3rd millennium B.C. — lie in the Indus valley. The acropolis, set on high embankments, the ramparts, and the lower town, which is laid out according to strict rules, provide evidence of an early system of town planning.”
