PESHAWAR: The Awami National Party (ANP) on Monday called for a transparent probe by a judicial commission or a parliamentary committee into the May 26 Kharqamar incident that claimed a number of lives and led to the arrest of two parliamentarians from South and North Waziristan tribal districts.

According to an ANP press release, Pashtun Tahafuz Movement leader Manzoor Pashteen met ANP provincial president Aimal Wali Khan on Monday and discussed problems being faced by Pashtun people in tribal districts. Aimal Khan stressed the need for a united struggle for their rights like provincial resources and development. Mr Pashteen said those found responsible for the May 26 violence should be punished.

In a related development, police removed the sit-in that the PTM workers had been holding in Hayatabad, Peshawar, since the Kharqamar incident.

Police said that the district administration had imposed a ban on gatherings in the provincial capital under Section 144.
