‘Imran unfit to govern’: Maryam hits out at PM in blistering speech

Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of incarcerated former premier Nawaz Sharif and a vice-president of PML-N, in a no-holds-barred speech on Tuesday lashed out at Prime Minister Imran Khan for being a "selected, incapable" premier.

Maryam was addressing a gathering in Lahore to mark Youm-e-Takbeer, when Pakistan conducted nuclear tests on May 28, 1998. Maryam as well as Hamza Shahbaz, who spoke earlier at the gathering, paid tribute to PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif for "making Pakistan a nuclear power".

"Don't hide behind institutions," she said addressing Prime Minister Imran. "If Nawaz was out [of jail] today, this [PTI's] government would not last."

"All his interviews, his speeches have been about Nawaz Sharif," said Maryam, asking the premier to focus his attention elsewhere.

"You might be a selected leader, but you are the 'incapable' premier of Pakistan — wake up, and serve the country and its people."

She also took a swipe at Prime Minister Imran's relations with India, saying that Indian premier Narendra Modi didn't take Imran's call in February when Pakistan and India engaged in aerial combat.

"This is the same Modi who came to Pakistan during Nawaz's time. Why don't people take your phone calls? Why do people not talk to you? Because you stole your way into power," she continued. "You are a puppet, you dance on someone's instructions. This is why no country is willing to give you respect."

As the crowd chanted the "government is scared of one brave woman", Maryam said: "Yes, they are very scared."

"As we celebrate Youm-e-Takbeer, we need to ask why is it that despite being a nuclear power, our country is still not stable. Why is our incapable premier still roaming around with a kashkol [begging bowl]?"

"When Pakistan conducted [nuclear] tests, Nawaz Sharif did not ask for money from anyone.

"Despite severe restrictions at that time, Nawaz did not let the economy collapse. And then there is you [Prime Minister Imran], who mortgaged the country for $6 billion from the International Monetary Fund (IMF)."

Maryam's fiery speech comes a day after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) issued a notice to her, seeking a reply to a Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) petition challenging her appointment as PML-N vice president.

The commission has fixed June 17 as the date for hearing the plea.

One simple question. Maryam Safdar told the entire Pakistani nation on live TV that neither she nor her siblings own any properties in Pakistan or abroad. She promised to apologise to the public if this was proven wrong. Has she apologised? She is making all these grandiose statements. Has any Pakistani journalist asked her that question? I just wish, she looked at PML-N's performances while they were in power before pointing her finger at PTI. PML-N and PPP are solely responsible for Pakistan's current financial difficulties. For example, spend billions to build a metro and then spend hundred of millions more every year to run it. I would love to know which smart PML-N head came up with these projects to serve their country and the people.

I wish someone would bother to educate her that it was ZAB who set the foundation of the nuclear program, Zia who followed in ZAB's footsteps who created a network of companies that smuggled the components required to build the reactor, the scientists who worked day and night build the reactor and give Pakistan nuclear capability. The weapon warheads were ready much before NS even stepped into the PM office. All he did was to order the test so that Pakistan could be placed on the map of nuclear-capable countries. She is good at making fool of ignorant people.

Even the government wouldn’t contest its under performance to date. So much was the promise on the PTI rise to power last year and so little there is to show for the 10 months in power! How disappointing! Rupee is dropping like a rock, interest rate is doubled and 9-months fiscal deficit is at record high. Add to that slowing economy, worsening inflation and rising unemployment. Where are we headed? Faced with an obviously disappointing 10-months PTI performance, Pakistan indeed needs an opposition that can call the under performing government to mat. That is the call of the democracy. Way to go Maryam Nawaz! Your Youm-e-Takbeer speech in Lahore was right on target.

Having said that unless we stop deflecting questions or bounce another question instead of an answer we will fail as a healthy and progressive society. Pay taxes fairly, respect the laws, do not participate in corruption, care sincerely for lrss-privileged citizens--none if this is difficult, but it takes a little bit of sacrifice for the sake if the country. IK does not have a magic wand to change the destruction of last 40 years. It is a hard climb up, and all we people must help whomever we mandate to lead.

As regards the variables of relationship between Nawaz Sharif & PM Modi, they were close due to common friends like Jindal, and the covert talks held about possible sellout of Pak Steel Mill to Jindal, which failed due to news breaks in media. Unbelievable! Here's someone who is a convicted fraudster. She committed perjury and submitted bogus documentation in court. She was given a jail term and is currently out on bail. Her father looted and plundered the state and built a massive and lavish property and business empire with the proceeds. This lady's brothers are absconders from justice. As is her uncle. Her cousin is also embroiled in corruption charges as well. The whole family is implicated in graft cases. Despite this, why does the media give attention to this criminal mafia family?

Leave Politics. Serve the country and people of the country by doing welfare work. Plan Hospitals, Universities, Institutions, Sports Facilities with your personal wealth for next 10 years. Until, appoint Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan ( although, it is hard to find someone like him in PMLN at this point, since most of the PMLN leaders are involve in legal battles and corruption cases ) or someone like him to lead the party. A name comes to mind, Raja Zafar ul Haq or ex Prime Minister Zafar Ullah Khan Jamali. I heard Nisar Sahib and Zafar Ullah Khan Jamali Sahib left the party, but if they could be brought back, in the absence of Nawaz Sharif Sahib and Shabaz Sharif Sahib, they are capable of leading the party. At the same time, PPP, same advice for Zardari sahib. Bilawal sahib do the above mention welfare things, get involved with people at grass roots for 10 years and appoint Aitizaz Ahsan Sahib as the leader of the Party.

This is rich coming from a convicted felon! She shows zero knowledge of Pakistan’s history. She is claiming credit on her father’s behalf for something he had nothing to do with. The N-program was a ZAB initiative and executed by hard working scientists who quit their jobs in the West to work in Pakistan. What did her father actually do, other than loot the exchequer? Her father was the one who went to the US and gave away the gains made by the military. Modi made a personal visit to your family wedding rather than affording any great state visit for the country. Perhaps she doesn’t know the difference! As for sate of country’s economy, here again she is devoid of any facts. It was her father’s last government and the previous one of PPP who ran up the massive debts. Other than empty rhetoric, does she have any constructive solutions on how to pay these? I didn’t think she did. She & the other losers are trying to stay relevant by making these ridiculous speeches.

Its all politics with half lies, half truths. Mr Nawaz Sharif was also a selected leader - first as a Chief Minister and then as Prime Minister - by the same forces that chose Imran Khan. Moreover Mr Nawaz Sharif did not make Pakistan into a nuclear state: that was Bhutto's doing. All that Mr. Nawaz Sharif did was to explode the nuclear device that had been sitting in Pakistan unannounced all along. And then Pakistan suffered a terrible economic crisis after that, though Maryam doesn't remember. Her father did take us WTO which was the basis for our prosperity during Musharraf and he did take us into CPEC. Those actions were great achievements, Ms Maryam: your father was indeed a great leader so talk about the things he did and not the ones he didn't do.

It is amazing how much positive media space she gets here. PML (N) is responsible for current crisis and they get away easy. Have not seen anything consistently critical on their economic policies and governance methods, even when they were in power in this independent paper. They need to be held accountable for corruption and economic mismanagement for their own benefit. Lets call spade a spade and report objectively. Glorifying person having no achievement by saying, Rips into PM, hits out at PM in blistering speech, is over the top and shows the journalistic tilt. Pak Rupee lost 40 % of its value in just 1.5 years. Maryam is right. Pak Rupee was never this low and never collapsing as it is now. Blaming Nawaz wont arrest the downfall of the Rupee. Worst currency in Asia and probably the world soon. The days of Nawaz Sharif would seem like paradise compared to Imran who has only mortgaged the country to the lowest bidder.
