NAB to grill Nawaz Sharif over 'illegal' use of 20 bulletproof cars

An accountability court in Islamabad on Tuesday allowed National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to interrogate former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on the alleged illegal use of 20 bulletproof cars imported for a conference of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc).

The anti-corruption watchdog had filed an application in the court, seeking direct access to Sharif in Kot Lakhpat jail — where he is currently serving a seven-year sentence in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills case — so that he could be interrogated by NAB investigation officers.

The government had imported 34 bulletproof cars from Germany for guests of a Saarc meeting in 2016. According to NAB — which is investigating the case of misuse of government cars — 20 out of 34 bulletproof cars were added to the personal caravan of Nawaz Sharif in sheer violation of rules.

According to the bureau, the bulletproof cars were also being illegally used by family members of the former premier.

NAB has already interrogated former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, the then principal secretary to prime minister Fawad Hassan Fawad and former foreign secretary in this regard.

A bulletproof car's price is beyond anybody's guess. Also, think about the protective, security wall he built around his palatial mansion in Jati Umra. All paid by taxpayers. Sharifs during their rule remained unaccountable.

Usage, legal or illegal, of the so-called bullet-proof cars by the former corrupt and bald Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan is over now. It's very hard if not impossible to quantify those damages to the exchequer of the country and might cost more to investigate than the actual value of the misuses. Therefore, the best bet in this case is to forgive, forget and move on.

Those same cars are now being used by his successor. There is more fire and fury in the allegations of corruption than in the pursuit of the cases themselves and nothing from the alleged billions looted has been recovered.

@Dr. Ali Canada, that is not true. What exactly happened in Pakistan since PTI took over I would like to explain in few words. So the country was functioning by a system regulated by corruption, tax evasion, money laundering and nepotism. So when PTI came in power they started to eliminate all these four ills of the society and that disrupted a system - the system functioning last 30 years. That disruption has triggered fears and chias among the majority who by some how was exploiting all those four ills of the society for their own benefits. Now the system is adjusting without those 4 social ills and it will take time before we start seeing some positive change especially in economic growth and employment. We will definitely be better off without these four social ills. So help IK. Good man.

This all seems targeted. There was reason that cars were imported. It is not that Mr. Sharif would have sat in all the cars. He was PM so meet bullet proof cars and same with. Any people travelling with him including his family.

@Moth, I for one agree with you on your thought, but lets also be careful here, Imran Khan needs to be smarter than he acts like and sounds like, its the economy that is hanging on by a thin thread, Imran Khan needs to put people and their welfare aside until the economy is more stable, Imran Khan cannot go on a spending spree on welfare, if the economy continues to tank, there won't be any Imran Khan left, the opposition will make sure of that, and people will support that.

Each piece is 7 to 8 carore, that’s 140 carore worth of only 20 cars. While they can’t import doctors with hospitals while it will save hack lots of money from the tax payers that they used for traveling with staffs, while it will help poor citizens saving lives, while it will give them a name when instead of going outside the country for treatment they trust their own medical system and service but that is the bridge for there shelter, which is not only Nawaz Sharif but almost all of those we’re usually scared of and seems to respect them use.

I remember that last year when opening of the Statue of Unity, PM Modi came by flight to Vadodara Airport from where he has to go by road to the site of Statue, the mayor of the City and some councilors along with reporters are three at the airport to receive Nr. Modi, during short break, every one has offered tea and breakfast, the bill was Rs. 3500. Suprisingly it has been paid by Mr. Modi. You need these kind of leaders.

Typical PTI thoughtology. NAB was there when cars were being used. Now it became illegal? Why NAB did not take any action when this crime was being committed? Rules not allow? Who makes rule? PM or parliament? Pti should have positive approach. If needs some ones approval get it. He is already in jail. I feel PTI wants NS imprisonment till death. Whay action IK will take on resignations of MS Mayo Hospital? Where NAB is now?
