This refers to the cultural heritage conservation movement, Karavan Karachi, which started on April 14 in pursuance of the directives of the Supreme Court to bring back the glory of Karachi. The Heritage Foundation of Pakistan, as a first step has embarked on a scientific cleaning of facades of Karachi’s historic buildings.

Beginning with the historic Denso Hall (1886) and its vicinity on Marriott Road, this movement will continue every Sunday from now on. I myself am extremely proud to be one of its very first volunteers.

A gentle scientific cleaning method was used to first dry clean and then wash Karachi’s beautiful buff-coloured stone. This movement is open to all Karachiites to come and participate. It is time we took charge of our culture and heritage.

Karachi has a rich past and we have to claim its lost glory. Denso Hall, Merewether Tower, churches in Saddar and even government buildings and courts — all require a little care.

In return, we might also see an influx of tourists and heritage aficionados into our city. Participating in this movement has truly been a splendid experience for me. I urge upon the youth to step forward, spread awareness and actively participate in this movement.
