Man sent to jail for 14 years in acid-throwing case

KARACHI: An antiterrorism court (ATC) on Thursday sent a man to jail for 14 years in an acid-throwing case.

The court found Danish guilty of attacking an air hostess with acid and causing her critical injuries in July 2015 in a Shah Latif Town locality. However, the ATC acquitted three co-accused Malik, Abdul Raheem and Mohammad Ashraf for want of evidence.

The court also directed the convict to pay diyat of over Rs800,000 to the victim and ordered that he would remain in prison even after completing his sentence in case of non-payment.

The prosecution said the victim had reportedly turned down a marriage proposal of one of the acquitted accused and he allegedly paid the three other accused to attack her with acid. Danish, along with his two accomplices, attacked the air hostess.

A case was lodged under sections 324, 336 and 34 of Pakistan Penal Code read with Section 7 of Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997 at Shah Latif Town police station.

if the victim of the crime has been disfigured then I believe in a similar treatment for the perpetrator. the use of acid attacks is horrendous and life changing for the victim if they survive. the victims hopes and desires are near enough destroyed. that is why under Islamic tenets, as long as somebody is found guilty of a crime in an open and transparent court, then the victim should be given an opportunity for a victim statement as well as a recourse of retribution on top of the the jail sentence. acid attacks occur too frequently in our country both against men and women but overwhelmingly against women. by merely speaking out against such evil will highlight the issue but strong punishment will in my opinion reduce the number of attacks.
