PM Khan welcomes CJP Khosa's statement on punishing those who give false testimony

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday welcomed Chief Justice of Pakistan Asif Saeed Khosa's statement from a day earlier in which the top judge warned those giving false testimonies, saying the court was "starting a journey towards the truth".

"I welcome [the] CJ's statement on punishing those who give false testimony," said Prime Minister Khan via a tweet. "'Journey towards truth' is a journey towards Naya Pakistan."

"Nations become great because they have a higher value system. Muslim civilisation's foundation was State of Medina with truthfulness as the core value," the premier added.

CJP Khosa on Monday had said that the court is starting a "journey towards the truth", which will entail strict action against those found to be guilty of having given false testimony in court cases.

The statement was made as the chief justice dismissed a murder case after it was found out that it was based on a false testimony given by a police officer.

"All those who have given testimonies, beware. We are starting a journey towards the truth from today — March 4," the chief justice said.

"If any part of any testimony is found to be false, the whole of it [the testimony] will be disregarded," the chief justice warned. "People who lie in testimonies have ruined the [judicial] system."

Very true.The main culprit is the lawyer who in the first step accept the case knowingly that he has to provide false testimonies to strengthen the case in the eyes of the jury.Lawyers licence to be cancelled for backing false testimonials.

What a commendable decision and all those who believe in rule of law will surely welcome it. We as overseas Pakistanis have watched with horror as false testimony and forged documents were presented yet the accused was not made accountable of committing perjury. In addition,since the Court has shown intent of discarding pleadings filed altogether in such a case, the right of Appeal should be denied. Furthermore, Pakistani Court should adapt applying cost on the Guilty as well as sanctions on the Law Firm as a means or for that matter prevent frivolous actions. Pakistan has some brilliant lawyers and certainly should not taint their reputation filing frivolous actions and/or use of false or forged documents.

What CJP will do it shall be in the best interests of the country. As most of civilian organisations are weak, impotent, poor in decision making and are corrupt, NAME ANY DEPARTMENT from tehsil courts to police, from exicise to FBR, so it may also be dealt with the help of CJP.

How can we stop false testimonies when criminal justice system and investigative processes are flawed? Why eye witnesses are not willing to give testimony and what protection the law provides them? Have we got robust witness protection laws? Daily Police log or Roznamcha may get manipulated for obvious reasons to avoid discrepancies in medico-legal reports and statements of complainants. Therefore, to stop false testimonies, government must bring about radical changes in the criminal justice system, investigate processes and witnesses protection laws.

Unfortunately, it's a common trend and a sociocultural norm in South Asia to give false and fake testimony in a court of law. Nevertheless, it's a good start in the "Land of the Pure" to get rid of it which might be very hard if not impossible to accomplish.

False and professional witnesses would stop when investigations are carried out by unbiased and expert persons on scientific basis without any political or economic gains consideration. CJP should also issue a code of conduct for lawyers which should be strictly implemented. The cases should be decided speedily without any delay.

What is actually the work of courts and judges? Unfortunately, it is now only that such steps are being taken otherwise, thousands of thousand s cases are falsified only due to the a availability of false witnesses . Bitter reality is that the CJ must have pronounced punishment according to the law and not just to warn a man .
