KARACHI: Dozens of journalists took out a procession on Tuesday from their offices to the Karachi Press Club in protest against layoffs, non-payment of salaries and deduction in salaries of their colleagues by both print and broadcast media houses.

A large number of members of the Pakistan Herald Workers Union representing Dawn Media Group, working journalists of private news channels, leaders of joint action committee — comprising factions of the Karachi Union of Journalists and Karachi Press Club — and members of the civil society participated in the procession and protest demonstration outside the press club.

Holding placards, the participants chanted slogans against the media organisations for their anti-workers policies and unjustified layoffs of the journalists in the name of business management, non-payment of dues and deduction in monthly salaries.

Addressing the demonstration, leaders of the media fraternity and civil society said that the journalist bodies would keep struggling for freedom of expression and rights of the working media persons despite all odds.
