HARIPUR: The Haripur district council will elect the new nazim on Tuesday (today), according to a notification issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan.

The district council had, through a majority vote of 56 out of 68, removed former district nazim Adil Islam through a no-confidence motion jointly tabled by the members of his own party, PTI, and opposition PML-N on Jan 14 on charges of corruption, mismanagement and violating party policies. However, the nazim denied the allegations, and accused some influential politicians from his own party, especially those whose alleged corruption he had referred to anti-corruption establishment for investigation, of being involved in de-seating him.

Meanwhile, the murder of a carpenter on Saturday was result of a love affair between the victim’s wife and his paternal nephew, claimed SHO city police station Siddique Shah while addressing a news conference on Monday.

He said the woman, a mother of two children, had been sent to Haripur jail while principal accused was on a two-day physical remand with the police.

The victim was found murdered in his house after he got back from morning prayers on Saturday.

SHO Shah quoted the wife of the victim, a resident of Mohallah Swatiyan Sikandarpur, as saying that she woke up hearing gunshots and found her husband lying in a pool of blood.

The SHO said the complainant claimed since it was darkness she could not identify the accused, and registered an FIR against unknown persons.

However, on the complaint of victim’s maternal nephew, who accused both the paternal nephew of the victim and his wife of committing the murder, the police arrested the two.

The SHO said preliminary investigation revealed that the victim’s nephew had been living with his uncle for last two years, and during this time, he developed illicit relations with his aunt to the extent that they got rid of the victim.

TREE PLANTATION: Secretary forest Syed Nazar Hussain Shah has urged the students to help promote tree-friendly society as it is imperative for survival of future generations.

This he stated while speaking to students and teachers of Government Higher Secondary School for Boys, Dingi, on Monday.

Mr Shah said the culture of not according respect to the natural resource of trees had caused irreparable loss to the forest cover in the province.

However, he said Prime minister Imran Khan’s vision of protecting trees and increasing forest cover had started producing results. He said for protecting forests from timber mafia strict vigilance system had been enforced in the province.

Later, he inaugurated the spring plantation campaign by planting a sapling in the vicinity of school.
