Chinese man caught ‘stealing’ money from ATM

ISLAMABAD: A Chinese man was caught allegedly stealing money from a bank.

Sun Bin was captured by the security staff of a private bank in F-7 Markaz while he is alleged to have been stealing money from the bank’s ATM with an accomplice.

The police said the second Chinese man managed to escape with the money and the tools used to conduct the operation.

The police took Sun Bin into custody and took him to the Kohsar police station where he was put in the lockup after a case was registered against him and his accomplice under PPC 380 for theft in a dwelling.

The foreigner was later produced in the court of a magistrate from where he was given in police custody on a two-day physical remand.

Kohsar Station House Officer (SHO) Sub-Inspector Abdul Razzaq told Dawn the bank’s head office in Karachi received an alert that the ATM machine was being tampered with.

The head office informed the F-7 bank staff who found the two men in the ATM booth.

Rs225,000 was stolen from the ATM, the SHO said, adding that the detained Chinese national had arrived in Islamabad from China on Jan 12.

The Chinese embassy was informed about the incident, the SHO said, adding that the suspect only speaks Chinese and that police officials are finding it hard to interrogate him.

A request was made to senior police officers for a translator.
