ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue has asked field formation to step up crackdown against the sale of non-duty paid cigarettes in markets.

An official source told Dawn that the directive was issued following complaints regarding the sale of imported cigarettes in the local market which were resulting in tax evasion and revenue losses.

According to the official, the Regional Tax Office Rawalpindi seized 1.38 million non-duty paid cigarettes from the premises of M/s New Peshawar Traders and M/s Sammar Traders based in Chakwal.

According to the official, legal proceedings against the custodians of these cigarettes will be initiated under the relevant provisions of the Federal Excise Act 2005 on the basis of information to be provided by the owner of property and a comprehensive report will be submitted accordingly.
