Gas crisis: PM Khan orders 'immediate removal' of SSGC, SNGPL managing directors

Prime Minister Imran Khan has ordered that the managing directors of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) be removed immediately from their posts, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said on Wednesday.
The information minister's statement has attributed the prime minister's decision to the review of a report submitted by a committee tasked with probing the ongoing gas supply crisis which rapidly escalated across the country over the past few months.
"The inquiry committee's report was presented to the prime minister yesterday," read the statement tweeted by Chaudhry, which added that "keeping in view the report's findings, the prime minister has announced that the heads of Sui Northern and Sui Northern be removed from their posts immediately".
Last month, the prime minister had ordered an inquiry into the dwindling supply of gas which not only forced industry closures across Punjab and Karachi, but even affected domestic consumers as residents in many parts faced outages.
The premier had summoned Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Ghulam Sarwar Khan who briefed him regarding SNGPL and SSGC's concealment of information from the government pertinent to a fault faced by some of the gas compressors.

According to the petroleum minister, a drop in gas production in the south fields of Kunnar Pasakhi and Gambat caused problems in Karachi, and faults in gas compressors at Nawabshah and Saran created shortages in the north.
“SNGPL did not report gas demand and supply shortfall in December accurately to the government, and SSGCL failed to inform the government about faults in the compressors in a timely manner,” a statement issued by the PM Office said.
“The specific allegations against the managing directors of SNGPL and SSGCL include negligence in reporting of facts to the ministry or incompetence to deal with operational issues, withholding of information from the government and overall systematic governance failure of SNGPL and SSGCL,” according to a notification issued by the petroleum division.

The government as well as PM should know that gas cannot be treated as electricity. Only electricity has to be consumed on production or varied based on demand. Gas can be stored in tanks like oil and supplied as per demand.

I wonder what government would do if they were made aware of the breakdown of some compressor. Will they dispatch a team of mechanics or order the gas companies to repair it quickly. If the latter is the case than the MD's should be fired if they were not carrying on the repairs.

Great step by IK but removal is not enough. These two persons also need to be punished. They must be booked under concealment of data act and lying to the government. If found guilty, they must not receive any pension either.

Will it help? I guess NO. You need to make arrangement to overcome the crisis. By firing people, problem would remain there. IK, I am PTI follower but I am not much happy with your team's performance. Accountability is important but there are few things which are way important than accountability. Please focus on them as well.

How could these incompetent higher officials pay attention to their job. They are busy managing their children ride to schools and colleges and than also send funds to those studying overseas. These officials go out of country on business matters but visit their children and family members.

@Shah, ....why surprised? Previous govts were involved in corruption and allowed these incompetent managers to do the same. Govt employees and others have been used to taking backhanders and are still being dictated by corrupt past leaders to bring IK to a halt with such actions. It will take years before ministries work properly. Sack incompetent employees and managers.

@Ranjha, Exactly but problem is that PTI has no time to keep an eye to run the affairs of country for which they were voted for as they are extremely busy in blame game and press conferences. Keep your head buried deep in sand while matter of fact is that to this day PTI has not even entered in government mode and slowly but surely this argument is also losing steam that please give them time as in months they would be touching one year mark. PTI claimed to have solution of everything when they were on the top of container so where all those solutions have vanished?

Fact of the matter is that PM imran khan even if wants to cant remove his incompetent federal minister who just made these MDs the scapegoats under the pretext of concealment of information because he lacks majority in the parliament thus his hands are tied fully to take decisions on merit..

The senior management behind MDs are the real culprits who have framed both MDs. They are the one's who did the damage and should also be held accountable. MD needs a competent team to work with. He cannot work with politically hired senior general managers who are working under him.

In our society, corruption has become a condition, the other names or face/s of it is mediocrity, nepotism and slacking off. But it is accepted and blatantly bragged about and we as people have given up,.This malice is from top to very bottom and everywhere from government departments to government-supported enterprise such as this. This is the first time we are witnessing such ruthless security the PTI government has embarked on and see detractors making all kinds of noises to disrupt the process. Pakistan bureaucracy and its top civil servants are lazy, incompetent undriven and it is almost impossible to make them productive and useful again. The best solution is to completely revamp the systems, bring competent people on merit by making civil service and semi-government organization such as this out of reach of mediocre.

Fire people if the solution exists but not achieved because incompetence, but you cannot fire people if solution do not exist. It is very like that gas shortage as well as electricity shortage is chronic. May be there is no quick fix. Before you fire - prove incompetence.
