KARACHI: Colleagues and activists on Wednesday paid glowing tributes to Shafiuddin Ashraf, general secretary of Pakistan Herald Workers Union and chairman of the All Pakistan Newspaper Emp­loyees Confederation (Apnec) who passed away last week.

Speaking at a condolence meeting in the premises of Haroon House, Sindh Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani said being a trade unionist himself he had a long association with late Ashraf whose incessant work had hugely inspired him.

Two sons and a daughter of Mr Ashraf said they had a very large family in the shape of hundreds of workers for whom their father had never turned his back.

Rishad Mehmood, president, PHWU, said that the late trade unionist was the epitome of sincerity and hard work.

Senior journalist Mazhar Abbas also recalled his days with the late Shafiuddin Ashraf as a union member and then representing the journalist fraternity and media workers from different platforms.

Ghulam Farid, acting general secretary PHWU, labour leader Habibuddin Junaidi, Karachi Union of Journalists’ president Faheem Siddiqui, journalists Nasir Mallick and Khurshid Tanweer, Ms Amber Haroon Saigol, chairperson, Dawn Media Group, Hameed Haroon, CEO Dawn and Zaffar Abbas, Editor Dawn, also spoke.
