ISLAMABAD, June 24: A ceremony was held at the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) head office on Friday to witness the dispatch of a consignment of relief goods worth Rs1.5 million for victims of heavy rains and flash floods in March this year in Jalalabad, Afghanistan.

The Ambassador of Afghanistan, Dr Nanguyalai Tarzi, was the chief guest on the occasion.

Responding to the needs of disaster survivors, the consignment provided by the PRCS included some 400 blankets, 100 tents, clothes and shawls and food items like rice, flour, sugar, dry grams and drinking water etc.

Speaking during the briefing at the ceremony, the PRCS chairman, Jahandad Khan, said the gesture would help mitigate the sufferings of Afghans in their hour of grief.

The PRCS has also been holding free eye camps in Jalalabad where Afghans, in great numbers, have been treated, he added.

Another eye camp would be held in August this year in Kabul.

Mr Khan said during his visit to Afghanistan, the PRCS was requested for assistance. More relief goods will be dispatched soon and the process to help those affected by rains and floods would continue, he added.

Afghan ambassador Dr Nanguyalai Tarzi welcomed the aid provided by the PRCS. He said it was yet another valuable and emotional gesture by Pakistan.
