LAKKI MARWAT: A villager was shot dead during a wedding ceremony in Wanda Baloch locality here, police said on Sunday.

They said Sadidullah armed with a pistol intercepted a wedding party near the house of the bride and demanded jubilation money from the family members of the groom as it is a custom that family of groom pays money locally called ‘sobat’ to relatives and neighbours of bride.

Police said Afsar Khan, father of the bride, rushed to the place when he learnt about stopping of the wedding party and started arguing with Sadidullah who, in a fit of anger, fired at Afsar with his pistol, killing him on the spot.

Police said the killer escaped and a case was registered against him under section 302 of PPC in Lakki Marwat police station.

OFFICE-BEARERS ELECTED: The local chapter of Wahdat-i-Asateza, a teachers’ organisation, elected office-bearers on Sunday.

In this connection a meeting was held in government high school No 2, Lakki city.

The office holders include Maulana Tameezuddin (patron-in-chief), Maulana Hidayatur Rehman (president), Anwar Sadiq (general secretary), Maulana Abdul Baqi Jan and Maulana Habibur Rehman (vice presidents), Maulana Jamshed Iqbal (joint secretary), Maulana Inshaullah (finance secretary) and Sheda Mohammad (press secretary).

The participants said they would participate in educational conference scheduled to be held in Peshawar in the last week of December and also formed two committees for Lakki and Naurang tehsils to facilitate teachers in that regard.

The newly-elected office holders demanded of the government to fill the vacant posts of male district education officer and deputy district education officer without delay.

The teachers’ leaders also asked the government to fill vacant posts of teachers, headmasters and principals in public sector schools and expedite the process of promotion of school cadre officers at provincial level.
