NEW DELHI: In the Council of State this morning [Nov 19], Sir Jogindra Singh, replying to Raja Yuvarajdutta Singh said, the necessary restrictions had already been imposed preventing the slaughter of useful cattle for supplying beef to the Defence Services in India. No cow in milk or pregnant cow or working cattle used for ploughing or transportation was accepted by them for slaughter. Steps were also being taken to enable imported frozen meat to be handled in India. If the scheme materialised, the slaughter of cattle in India for food purposes would be further reduced.

The import of live cattle, said the Education Member, was not practicable. He further explained that two-thirds of the beef required for Defence Services was met by importing tinned beef from abroad.

Sir Feroz Khan Noon, replying to the same member stated that shortly after the capitulation of Italy, the majority of prisoners of war camps in Italy passed to German control. It was reported by the International Red Cross that 5,000 Indian prisoners of war had been transferred from Italy to Germany. Over 200 Indian prisoners of war had rejoined the advancing Allied Forces. — Dawn Delhi
