Quality over grades

Published November 14, 2018

I HAVE been in the teaching profession for a while now and it gets really frustrating to see the state of affairs in the education sector.

The business side has taken over the basic principle of education and this has caused a decline in the standard of results. It feels like schools and colleges are run more like coaching centres.

The grooming aspect of education is being thoroughly neglected by the teaching fraternity as well. It is as if they have been instructed by the owners of these institutions to bring the result up to par and that’s it.

I was lucky enough to see a better time as far as education in the city is concerned, and it hurts to see it go downhill. In the past we did not have many schools, colleges and universities but the overall quality was what made it worthwhile. Today, an abundance of the aforementioned places fail to deliver even the task that has their full attention: grades.

For a society to prosper and grow there needs to be a drive away from this ‘only grades matter’ mentality to ‘education is more than just grades’ and for that, a scrutiny of all the educational institutions is necessary.
