ISLAMABAD: The newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Aamir Zulfiqar Khan on Wednesday said the Islamabad Police would establish an accountability cell in its department to check corruption in the force.

Strict disciplinary action will be taken against those involved in corrupt practices, he said while talking to Dawn.

The IGP said assistant inspectr general of police (Operation)would be the in-charge of the cell, while a DSP, four inspectors, four SIs and eight constables would be its members.

“The cell will investigate the complaints against the police officials,” he said.

A notification to establish the cell will be issued in next few days, he added.

The IGP further said that he had ordered audit of the police stock, including armoury, Mall Khana and case properties at the police stations. Such audit has never been done in the capital police, he added.

He said that new induction would be made in Islamabad police and promotions would be made against the vacant seats next month. The long-awaited promotion of DSP has also been initiated and case in this regard will be sent to the authority concerned next week, Mr Khan added.

All issues of policemen would be resolved on merit basis and there would be no need to approach anyone in this regard, he added.

Earlier, speaking at the Police Darbar on Wednesday the IGP said he would not tolerate element odf corruption and bribery in the force and those involved in such practices would be shown the door. Conciliatory committees would be constituted in Islamabad on the pattern of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and public complaints to be resolved on priority basis, he added.

He directed all police officials to ensure protection to the lives and property of the citizens.

He said welfare of policemen would be his top priority and all personnel would have to work as a team for bringing laurels to the force.

The IGP mingled with the policemen on the occasion and listened to their problems. He ordered exemption of the under-training personnel at Police Training School from the duties during law and order situation.

The IGP said that he would conduct a ‘special sitting’ in each month where officers and officials can brief him about their problems.

Meanwhile, during his visit to Safe City Project on Thursday he directed the managers of the project to install a system aimed at tracing CNIC details as well as location of hoax callers.

The Islamabad police daily received 3000-3500 calls, but only 35 to 40 are genuine.

The IGP also checked the efficacy of the Safe City by making a one call about a theft of a vehicle, but poor response by telephone operator disappointed the IGP.

He advised the DIG (Operations) to start a training programme for telephone operators to enhance their capacity.
