Over 2,200 cars found registered in name of former judge

In an unusual development, more than 2,200 cars have been found registered in the name of a former judge.

Sikandar Hayat, an 82-year-old former judge, owns just one car, his lawyer Mian Zafar informed the Supreme Court on Saturday.

"[But] 2,224 cars were registered in the name of my client," the counsel said.

According to Zafar, his client had received a challan [fine] a few days ago for a car which he did not own.

Upon contacting the Punjab Excise and Taxation Department, it emerged that an eye-watering 2,224 vehicles had been registered in Hayat's name.

After hearing the lawyer, the top court sought a reply from the secretary and director of the Punjab excise department.

The department has been directed to submit a report on the matter within a week.

On a smaller scale this activity is on going in many parts of the country One of the reason (may be) Sale requires a valid driving license So show rooms have copies of licenses which they may be using to complete the documentation. More so in case of motorbikes Some day we will discover people with dozens of bikes on their license

Now, every politician and judge should be verified in terms of the vehicle registration also the chief military officials including the police officers because it looks like it is not limited to one person. Further, check the real estate documents as well if anything not owned but registered under the elite people. It is a high level corruption and big fishes are involved in it. You may reach to the grass root of the corruption if there is a sincere efforts. I hope IK has noticed this.

It's no wonder why Pakistan is not going digital. All attempts to computerize have failed miserably by the honest and hard working staff of the excise department. Terminate the staff and hire fresh staff. Cancer has to be ripped out by surgery not by fake medicine. This is how you fix a problem, put the fear of losing a job in the hearts of corrupt officials. Does PTI have the guts to do this, probably NOT!!!

The problem is that this shouldn't even be an issue if the Auto policy made it easy for people to own new vehicles rather than collecting outrageous tax on them. It is time to make car buying easier for the consumer as well as ensuring that the cars make the latest first world safety standards. The automakers in Pakistan are way behind with a backward mindset. The time has come to change that.

Using the identity of other person is no crime in Pakistan. Most of the time we hear that property under dubious name be confiscated. Unless we start punishing the person using such assets as well as those officials issuing such authorization with jail terms we cannot stop this menace; be it real estate , bank accounts, telephone or now cars.

It is a case of an institutionalized Corruption. Some big guns are behind this scandal, registering 22,000 cars to one person name without coming on the radar screen of the Excise and Taxation and vehicle registration office department is simply not possible. Apprehend the culprits and confiscate the vehicles they will speak up.

@Hedonist If he ACTUALY owned those cars he would have simply paid the challan and avoided detection, but he instead contacted the concerned deptt.. That alone confirms that his name was being used in this fraud without his knowledge or involvement.

When a genuine common man goes for opening bank account, property purchase or any other legal matter, he is asked about 110 documents starting from CNIC to may be birth certificates of his forefathers but for the fraud people just a currency note or an influential relation gets the exemptions and waivers from all the requirements. No wonder this happened rather we should expect discovering many more apparently foolish but actually deliberate blunders.

I can very safely say that none even including the richest person on the face of earth or and or any head of state owns so many vehicles under his or her name than our Pakistani. I recommend two immediate and important actions namely (a) his name is included in the list along with other so that President bestows him with some medal on 23rd March (b) Pakistan should approach GB to include his name in its 2019 edition. @aziz Please read the article before passing judgements. The judge does not possess or own these cars. They are registered by someone else in his name. This is why he himself contacted the authorities and alerted them to this issue.

@aziz the judge hasn’t admitted ownership of these vehicles if he did then he had a case to answer - In NS case he admitted in Parliament the properties were his and so the owness was on him to prove they were bought by legitimate means - which he failed to do and in the process lied and was uncooperative in investigations - a reminder that he took 2.5hrs to admit his cousin was in fact his cousin during the JIT investigations (this was on record!)!

If what the retired Honourable Judge says is true (and I do not doubt him), and all those (2,224 cars) have been falsely put under his title, then, as punishment to all those involved, since they are under his title, he should authorise an auction, and all the monies collected should then be put in the Dam scheme, or for the rehabilitation of the drought affected poor people in Sindh. That should teach a lesson to all these corrupt KPT officials who are in cahoots with the people who import these cars.

It is 200% fault of excise and taxation department, that how they were registering 2200 vehicle in one name? Where was computer record, where their senior staff of excise, why they were not checking record of owner ship of individual vehicle? Now I have no faith in any government department record.
