UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan on Wednesday [Oct 16] suggested that mandatory sanctions against the illegal and racist regime of Ian Smith of Southern Rhodesia be severance to include severance of postal, telegraphic and transport links. Pakistan also felt that the General Assembly should once again reiterate constitutional and moral responsibility of Britain to quell the Smith regime by all measures, including the use of force.

Speaking in the Fourth or Trusteeship Committee of the General Assembly, Mr Abdul Hamid Khondakar, MPA, a Pakistani delegate to the Committee, further urged that the United Nations ensure full implementation of UN Security Council resolutions on Southern Rhodesia. He pointed out that the situation in Southern Rhodesia had become more grave since the Security Council first took cognisance of it. He referred to the utter collapse of the rule of law there and the complete denial of human rights and ever increasing repression perpetrated on the people of Zimbabwe.

The Pakistani delegate said that “above and beyond these elements is the increasing measure of the alliance of racism and colonialism in Southern Africa. This sinister alliance has launched an all out offensive against the forces working for peace and the establishment or a just and stable order in Southern Rhodesia.” —Correspondent
