THE Jalalpur Irrigation project is a scheme designed to irrigate areas of Jalalpur and Khushab districts. The Asian Development Bank is the main funder of the project, whose purpose is to increase agricultural production and reduce poverty in the region.
However, the major benefit will go to politicians and landlords. Politicians belonging to former government of Punjab have actively bought thousands of acres of land in the region at very cheap rates.
This diminishes the objective of reducing poverty in the region; rather will enhance the power of the landlords.
