EMINENT journalist and writer Shaikh Aziz passed away last week. His demise has put an end to an era. He was an encyclopedic personality with in-depth knowledge of history, literature, music, politics and socio-economic conditions of the country.

Born in 1938 in Hyderabad, Aziz was an eyewitness to major political changes in the country. He played a pivotal role in promoting journalism and education.

In the late 70s, Shaikh Aziz joined hands with Dr Khan Mohammad Panhwar, the founder of the media and communication studies department at the University of Sindh, Jamshoro, and remained visiting faculty in the department along with Johar Hussain. He authored the first Sindhi book on journalism, which is a part of the syllabus of the mass communications department.

During his association with Dawn, he wrote Pakistan’s history in a weekly column in Dawn magazine. It lasted nearly four years

One will be hard put to find a person of his calibre. May his soul rest in peace.
