ATC indicts ex-IG Sukhera in Model Town incident

LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court on Tuesday indicted former inspector general of police Mushtaq Ahmad Sukhera in a private complaint filed by Idara Minhajul Quran/Pakistan Awami Tehreek for his trial on charges of killing its workers during 2014 Model Town incident.

Mr Sukhera who was present in court denied the charges against him and decided to contest the trial. The court adjourned hearing for a day and summoned prosecution witnesses.

During April this year, the court had also indicted 116 others including officials of police and district administration after they pleaded not guilty in the same case.

The court had in 2017 partially admitted the private complaint against 125 officials nominated as accused while rejected it to the extent of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, former Punjab chief minister Shahbaz Sharif and 10 others including federal/ provincial ministers.

A Lahore High Court full bench dismissed a plea of PAT against non-summoning of the 12 political figures and bureaucrats by the trial court. However, the bench had dismissed a petition by Mr Sukhera against his summoning by the trial court.

The politicians and bureaucrats include former premier Sharif, former chief minister Shahbaz Sharif, now Punjab opposition leader Hamza Shahbaz, former law minister Rana Sanaullah Khan, former railways minister Khwaja Saad Rafiq, former foreign minister Khwaja Asif, former information minister Pervez Rashid, former state minister Abid Sher Ali, former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, then personal secretary to chief minister Syed Tauqir Shah, then home secretary Azam Suleman, and then Lahore Commissioner Rashid Mahmood Langrial.

At least 14 persons were killed and more than 100 injured during the anti-encroachment operation outside the Model Town residence of PAT chief Dr Tahirul Qadri on June 17, 2014.

How cruel, a lot of people lost their lives .. This incident wasn't less than jalian Wala bagh incident. With due apology, our police is void of humanity. Now who has to set it right, nobody knows.

Don't let masterminds and their cronies of Model town's murderers get away, as public want to know real culprits, who planned and instructed police to kill 14 innocent people and injury over 60 indiscriminately. Justice must prevail and truth must come out with severe punishments - this is what public want to without further delay.

At the very least the model town incident happened under this persons watch and so he should face the consequences.. aiding abetting and turning a blind eye while in a position of power deserves severe punishment

This police officer should provide full details as to what he knows about shooting of those protesters. Specially who ordered the shooting of protesters that resulted in many loss of lives and numerous injuries.

It is unfortunate that, a Police chief is being grilled for accepting orders of his boss for taking action as directed while at the same time, another Police chief is being grilled for not accepting another of such orders.

It is time for convicted people to name the order givers without any fear of retaliation or threat to their families as times have changed. It is know fact in Pakistan that big bosses had used their juniors to carry out heinous crimes under threats for their own benefits.

@Leoman You will see the results in this World, the women who lost their lives, but the most cruelty, Shahbaz and Company did, was the pregnant woman whom police shot on the head, she lost the baby and left this World, they all need justice ASAP.

We the public know that police cannot work alone and orders have to come from CM Punjab or from Police chief Rana Sanaula. Get a physical remand of this police officer and he will disclose each and everything if remand is fully applied on him.
