KARACHI: A huge fire that broke out in a chemical warehouse in the Shershah area on Saturday evening was finally put out on Sunday morning, officials said.

They said that they received information at about 8.30pm on Saturday about the fire in Noorani chemical godown located near Shershah’s Pankha Hotel.

Initially, they dispatched one fire tender but after realising the gravity of the fire, more fire tenders were called in from across the city.

As many as 10 fire tenders controlled the blaze after hour-long efforts and the cooling work continued whole night.

The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board had provided 40,000 gallon water. Since chemicals were kept in the warehouse, the fire brigade officials used foam to extinguish the fire.

An official said that the fire again erupted in the godown at around 8:21am on Sunday, which was controlled at 9:44am.

The fireman said that the exact cause of the fire and estimate of losses could not be made immediately.

The godown owner alleged that the firefighting began with a delay and with one fire tender. By the time more fire tenders arrived the fire had engulfed the warehouse, he added.

Mayor Wasim Akhtar told the media that the cause of the fire was so far not known.
