CJP takes notice of Lahore lawyers 'beating up' police official

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar on Sunday took notice of the alleged assault on a police official in Lahore by lawyers.

The top judge issued notices to the Inspector General Punjab Muhammad Tahir to appear in the Supreme Court along with a report on the matter on Oct 13.

Notices were also issued to Pakistan Bar Council Vice Chairman Ahsan Bhoon, and the president and general secretary of the Lahore District Bar Association (LDBA), according to an SC press release.

The alleged assault came to the notice of the CJP through reports that the SI had been beaten by some lawyers of the LDBA.

According to a report published by The Nation, the complainant, SI Samar Riaz Khan, in a first information report registered against advocates Saif Khokhar, Nabeel Haider, Mustafa Khokhar and 14 others last Thursday stated that a police officer deployed in the court of a judge had telephoned him to tell him the court had summoned him at 12pm.

When he reached the court at 1pm, the SI said he was attacked by the accused in the sessions court. The SI stated that they had thrashed and tortured him, and criminally intimidated him. He added that they lawyers had also torn off his uniform and kept him in illegal custody in a room. He alleged that the lawyers had also threatened his life if he took legal action against them, The Nation reported.

The Police in Pakistan no doubt have a tainted record but Lawyers have no right at all to take the law into their own hands. These Lawyers are a totally uncontrollable lot and they must be taught a lesson. They are thoroughly non-professional. One reason is the lack of any training before they enter their profession actively. Something must be done to stop this non-sensense behaviour on these Lawyers' part.

This is not something new. Lawyers in Pakistan are worst than criminals they protect or fight their cases. It is known fact that traffic police had been reluctant to issue them fines for violation of traffic or parking rules. The time has come for CJ and the new Government to break their back bone of such attitudes.

If layers behave like street urchins and thugs, making mockery of law from which they earn a living. They have attacked judges and caused demage to courts. If this happened in the UK, the lawers will be barred for life to practice law even as an adviser and given examplary jail sentences. Pakistan has become a country where the elite behave as mafia above the law.

Lawyers' 'Gunda Gardi' is a worrying trend and suggests that there are black sheep in judiciary as well that need to be identified and dispelled. Law should be same for all, no matter who they are - justice must prevail.

Unfortunately...Laws catch flies but lets hornets go free. folks... Why Punjab Police is not arresting those lawyers. Is police so helpless ? Few days back, few boys including a Minister's son had snatched rifles from policemen and made them hostages. What type of Police is this which can't protect itself.

Lawyers have been found to be involved in such incidents of beating police officials many times before. This time, their lawlessness should not be ignored, instead a very stern lesson has to be taught so as no one ever dares to act in such shameful manner. Suspend their licenses for couple of years.

Beating up anybody is against the law. We, all, be they lawyers, bureaucrats, politicians, or ordinary citizens must follow the laws. There are procedures available to address the grievances. If the legal fraternity cannot have an inner legality then it will lose its moral superiority. It is good that the Chief Justice of Pakistan has taken notice of this incident.

Height of illetracy, ignorance, eccentricity, shamelessness and unilateralism shown by attorneys in Lahore, Islamic Republic of Pakistan, when they physically assaulted a police officer. This is a pathetic example of taking law into their own hands by the defenders of law and order and setting a very bad precedent to that effect. Shame on them.

These types of lawyers , if they are then their licenses must be revoked and legal action must be taken by law. Nowadays lawyers through out Pakistan comes out in street and act like uneducated citizen, who burn tires and damage private properties. These lawyers are disgrace for the society.
