SIALKOT, June 13: The three main biradaris in Sialkot district — the Jatts, the Arains and the Gujjars — are trying to muster support of Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi for the nomination of their candidates for Sialkot district nazim’s slot in the upcoming local body elections. Independent political observers are of the view that PML president Chaudhry Shujaat Husain’s recent visit to Sialkot has also paved the way for biradarism in the politics of this area.

It is learnt that the Variyo family, belonging to the Gujjar biradari, has also decided to field its candidate for the district nazim slot.

MPA Chaudhry Khush Akhtar Subhani has claimed that the Variyo family fully deserves to fight for this coveted seat owing to its strong political standing and public-welfare works.

NA Speaker Chaudhry Ameer Husain, also belongs to the Gujjar biradari, has a very soft corner for the Variyo family. It has also got a ‘green signal’ from the PML chief.

Jatt biradari’s chairman and MPA Azeem Noori Ghuman is also considered to be a strong political figure in the district. This group’s proposed candidate, Chaudhry Arsal Waqar Ghumman, is also confident of giving a hard time to other candidates for the district nazim slot.

Most of the aspirants of the three biradaris, in their bid to get the support of the ruling party, are arranging lavish parties.

The main political tussle for the slots of Sialkot district nazim and tehsil nazims of Sialkot, Daska, Sambrial and Pasrur is gaining momentum.

On the other hand, the wealthy and well-connected aspirants have also started mass contact drives to contest the election for the district nazim slot.

Meanwhile, District Nazim Mian Naeem Javaid of Arain biradari is also confident about his re-election.
