HANGU, June 12: Seven people, four of them members of one family, were killed and four others suffered injuries in a shootout during a jirga in the Lower Orakzai Agency on Sunday. The local jirga was holding a session to resolve a land dispute between two brothers, Aqal Shah and Latif Shah, when they exchanged harsh words and opened fire at each other.

As a result, Aqal Shah, his sons Sayed Amin and Shireen, wife of Latif Shah, and their relatives Abdullah, Abdal Shah and Faizullah were killed.

The injured included Madad Shah, Hikmat Shah, Mir Badshah, wife of Aqal Shah and an arbiter.

Witnesses said that the jirga had been convened to resolve the dispute over the ownership of a land between the two brothers.

The jirga had just started its proceedings when the two brothers opened indiscriminate fire at each other.

Assistant political agent of Lower Orakzai Agency Mohammad Iqbal said that the incident had taken place in the Sanghra village near Meshti Mela area.
