MULTAN, June 12: Mukhtaran Mai, the victim of Meerwala gangrape, has reportedly been informed by the police authorities that she would be driven to Lahore amid tight security at midnight between Sunday and Monday.

Sources in the police department said that they were directed by the high-ups to bring Mukhtaran and her close aide Naseem Ghizlani to the Punjab capital where they were scheduled to attend a moot being organized for women’s rights. The sources said however they did not know that who was the organizer of the moot.

“Mukhtaran will be transported to Islamabad on Tuesday from Lahore where she is scheduled to meet the Prime Minister’s adviser Niolfer Bakhtiar,” sources added.

Mukhtaran confirmed that she had been told by the local police to get ready for the travel by midnight. “I do not know the purpose of the travel except that I am told that in Lahore I will have to meet one Shagufta and in Islamabad the PM’s adviser,” she mentioned.

She again complained against the police personnel deputed at her residence in Meerwala saying that they had made life miserable for her and her family. She said that her aide Naseem had been with her for the last couple of days and on Sunday she was denied exit from her (Mukhtaran’s) house when she wanted to go back to her home in Alipur.

She said that the local police were pressing her to surrender her passport. Mukhtaran said that she and Naseem were invited by an organization of Pakistani doctors in North America to attend a moot being organized there in the current month to discuss the state of women and human rights in Pakistan. “I think the government does not want me to attend that moot,” she observed, saying “for this reason, perhaps, my name has been put on the exit control list”.
