Rs129m sought for 46 new cars for LHC judges

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court has requested the Punjab government to release a supplementary grant of Rs129.414 million for the purchase of 46 brand new cars for as many judges.

It is reliably learnt that the court’s registrar office has sought chief minister’s approval for the provision of supplementary grant for the procurement of 46 new Honda Civic (1800cc) Oriel CVT.

The registrar office has quoted manufacturer’s price (ex-factory rate) of a car at Rs2.728 million, adding that the total cost of 46 cars will be Rs125.488 million plus Rs3.926 million for vehicles registration.

The registrar office has requested the chief minister for approval, in principle, of the provision of supplementary grant of Rs129.414 million during the current financial year 2018-19.

Sources in the Punjab government say the demand for release of supplementary grant requires approval by the finance department as well as the Punjab cabinet.

Why can’t these judges have their own cars? They are paid big salaries and other allowances, and they can afford their own transport.

Still some remnants of “live a high life at the taxpayers expense” remain. The LHC should be told NO as far as any new purchases are concerned. If they have a verifiable need, just transfer a few vehicles from another department that has too many.

What's wrong with the old cars? Moreover, the Hilux Revo vehicles required at great cost for Assistant Commissioners recently can be provided to the Judges of LHC if they must have new vehicles. Move the ACs to Suzuki Cultus.

LHC being the one most responsible institution in the province.This type of demand from them is ridiculous. Are they unaware of the PM's struggle of c9llecting or do they think their self luxuries are more important than the country's stability. Why do they can't continue using the same cars .I hope those are not completely worned out and can be used normally. I request that those judges and couts should also be made the part of money saving movement and must have upon them a proper check. People of Pakistan has started to have the expectation that all the citizens would be treated the same under the law, and government officials can no more over enjoy their positions anymore

In most cases, automobiles given to officials, be it Judiciary, Administration and others, are used, mostly, by the families of those officials. Every day we see cars with green plates crowding all over at all times carrying passengers who definitely do not look like officials by their dress and age. This is naked corruption but is taken so lightly. It must change. Absolutely no new cars. Austerity measures should not be made a joke.

Could they be allocated the vehicles in the car pools which are to be sold by the federal and provincial governments at throw away prices? Austerity may be achieved that way if the government is sincere in its pledge to economize. The ownership of these vehicles could be kept with the government. At least they will be saving the money to be spent on the purchases of these cars.
