Police team set up to probe liquor case against Sharjeel Memon

A special police team was constituted on Saturday to probe a case registered against PPP leader Sharjeel Memon and three others for the alleged possession of liquor, it was learnt on Sunday.
The incarcerated former minister, his driver and two servants were booked by police yesterday under Section 4 (owning or possessing intoxicant) of the Zia-era law, The Prohibition (Enforcement of Hadd) Order (4 of 1979).
The section under which the case has been registered reads: "Whoever owns, possesses or keeps in his custody any intoxicant shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term, which may extend to two years, or with whipping not exceeding thirty stripes, and shall also be liable to fine."
The case was registered after Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar paid a surprise visit to Ziauddin Hospital in Clifton on Saturday, during which he found three bottles of liquor in the room of the ex-minister, who told the CJP that the bottles did not belong to him.
Jan Mohammad, Memon's driver, told reporters while being taken away that the bottles spotted by the CJP did not contain liquor. One of the bottles contained honey while the other contained cooking oil, he claimed.
SSP South Omar Shahid Hamid said yesterday that police had collected blood samples from Memon and that "there will be an inquiry" and "action will be taken against those found responsible". The results of the blood tests have not yet been made available.
The SSP had also said the police seized the bottles given to them by the jail officials and sent them to a forensic lab for examination, and that police investigators had also obtained DVR footage from the hospital.
The team comprising Deputy Inspector General South Javed Alam Odho, Senior Superintendent Police Investigation South Abdullah Jan and SSP Investigation East Shabbir Memon, was constituted "for the purpose of completion of investigation of case FIR no. 398/2018 u/s 4 Prohibition Ordinance", a police notification dated Sept 1 said.
Memon was parcelled off to Karachi's Central Jail soon after the discovery of 'liquor' in his room, as police and hospital authorities scrambled to save face.
Meanwhile, the three arrested servants were brought before the court on Sunday. The court issued orders for the three to be sent to jail on a 14-day judicial remand.

Really? A team had to be set up to investgate some liqiour bottles in the hospital room of an accused? Isn' this part of their job any way? Maybe the Police were complicit in it if they were guarding the sub-jail. Now the team will just scratch each other's back, have a good time and come up with lame excuses that could've been established in 5 minutes, instead of wasting resources on a 'team'.

The question is, will police be able to conduct an impartial investigation based on evidence found in the room? I don't think so, because, Asif Zardari and his cronies will influence the investigation and will try to protect Sharjeel Mamon. This is my view.

If the hospital was a sub-jail then the jail staff is not blameless. They are responsible for allowing contraband into it. This not the first instance of a jailed person being lodged in a hospital, there are numerous cases of it.

It will be difficult to prove that it was not alcohol but an alcohol oil after CJ smelled himself had smelled it and handed over bottles to police. It is known fact that Shirjeel consumes alcohol as sometime back Shirjeel was shown drinking in a PUB in London with video going viral on media. If he gets away from police inquiry then CJ should file a case against him and ensure that he doesn't anymore enjoy the comfort of a hospital owned by another criminal.

How interesting that Sharjeel Memon bought the olive oil (or cooking oil) that comes in their own bottles and poured them into bottles of wine. Or honey, that comes in bottles anyway and that too had to be poured into another alcoholic drink bottle. Looks like Shajeel Memon could only find alcoholic bottles for his honey and oil. Mr Memon, do you really think everyone in Pakistan is stupid?. You may have kept Sindhis without schooling but some of us despite your efforts have got ourselves some education and you have no idea how silly you look because of these excuses. There seems to be a whistle blower involved in the case, providing lead to expose mockery, deceit & criminal conspiracy in high places, to ridicule law enforcement when such high profile corrupt political bigwigs of the ruling party is involved. This episode being a total embarrassment to all conniving parties, which apart from the carriers of the banned alcohol, clearly involves police, hospital staff and others working as puppets to follow golden rule in such cases “not hear, see or speak any evil”. One can be sure of the fact that this corrupt fast and furious of the PPP has very powerful accomplices in the hierarchy of the party, who have been getting huge dividends from his corruption amounting to billions, are passing on favor back to him for his unrelentless services all these years. If a honest probe of this shameful episode is conducted, then many including medical board of professional doctors who purposely recommended this alcohol addict to hospital will come in the open.

I wish Chief Justice had taken samples of liquor from the bottles. Why real culprit in whose room bottles were found not booked? Presence of liquor is not important than role generally played by Jailors under instruction from government( in power) in sending influential prisoners to Hospitals where they get VIP treatment. Why no action is taken against doctors who recommend them to be sent to hospital. Beside that influential and rich criminals get all facilities of comfortable life in jails. On the other side many innocent persons lodged in jails for trial are forgotten for decades. There is need to appoint a commission to scrutinise working of jails and criminal malpractices of jail officers.It is said Jailors post is most sought out government job which are auctioned by minister concerned.

If this is being investigated (which it should not be as we should be using resources for more important matters) by FIA, not Sindh police. People's party has totally corrupted institutions in Sindh. No government institution in Sindh functions independently according to their mandate any more. We elect people's party again and again and the party has left no space for honest and competent people. The situation is even more alarming in interior Sindh as people in the interior are too weak to protect their rights.
Also, there is no lack of people in Pakistan who regularly smoke, drink, or take intoxicating drugs. So, we need to stop this hypocrisy where we go crazy when alcohol/drugs/cigarettes are discovered in a hospital or so called sub-jail. Generations are being destroyed due to this menace. And the problem exists at all levels of society.
