RAWALPINDI: The Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC) on Thursday asked 46 union councils (UC) to submit development schemes for the current fiscal year 2018-19.

A senior RMC official told Dawn that the corporation had planned to start development work in the city after the elections, therefore, it asked all union councils’ chairmen to send their proposals within two weeks.

He said the RMC had allocated Rs1.639 billion for the projects from its own resources.

He said development schemes would be presented before the house for approval.

The official said the RMC would start development works in the UCs in phases.

He said in the first phase, which would complete by year end, it would focus on thickly-populated areas.

“The RTMA will not launch any scheme prepared by municipal officer or officials. Under the local government ordinance, the local representatives’ development scheme will include repair or reconstruction of roads, nullah, footpaths or installation of streetlights,” he said.

He said the RMC would also accommodate the development scheme suggested by the traders’ organisation or associations.

He said the RMC would also address residents’ complaints about poor condition of roads or nullahs subject to availability of funds and with the consent of the mayor.

He said development schemes include construction and re-carpeting of roads and streets in the city.

He said on the request of RMC, the local union council chairmen would also check the tender process and contract awarding through the committee formed by the house to ensure quality of development work and merit.
