RAWALPINDI: The police on Monday arrested two PML-N supporters from outside Adiala jail on charges of interference into police matters and showering rose petals on the vehicle carrying former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to an accountability court in Islamabad.

The two detained political workers were identified as Afzal Mehmood and Yasir Ahmed, residents of Lahore and Gujranwala, the police said.

According to the police, personnel from various law enforcement agencies were deployed outside the jail to protect the motorcade carrying Nawaz Sharif, who is serving a 10-year sentence in the Avenfield corruption reference, to an accountability court in the federal capital when two men went near the cruiser by breaching security layers.

The men started showering rose petals on the car and shouted slogans in his favour. They were apprehended by police personnel.

The police bundled them into a police mobile van and moved them into a lock up in the Adiala police picket. A case was later registered against them as well.

Saddar Station House Officer Javed Siddique said the two men were booked for putting up resistance against police officials and breaching a VIP security route.

“We have lodged an FIR against the two accused under sections 353/182 of PPC and put them behind the bars,” he said.

He said police would produce the accused before court on Tuesday to obtain their physical remand.
