PESHAWAR: The Water and Sanitation Company Peshawar (WSSP) on Thursday showed its consent to carry out joint venture with the Unesco and WHO for cleanliness drive and mass sensitisation programme in the most populace locality of Peshawar city.

In a statement issued here, WSSP chief executive officer Engineer Khan Zaib appreciated the efforts and willingness of the international organisations for showing interest in helping WSSP towards cleaner and hygienic municipality.

“We value the support the Unesco and WHO have extended to us for achieving our objective of hygienic metropolis,” he said and added that such efforts would improve the sanitation and hygiene system in the area.

Representatives of Unesco and WHO and other officials of WSSP were also present in meetings held here separately. In these meetings, it was agreed that WSSP with the financial support of Unesco would carry out cleanliness, sanitation and mass sensitisation programme in Shaheen Muslim Town-I and II. The area is being considered one of the most populace localities of Peshawar city where issues like drinking water, sanitation, solid waste disposal and choked drainage lines persisted.

At present, WSSP has deputed 47 sanitation workers and 26 additional staff to ensure cleanliness of 20.7km drainage lines. The Unesco intends to carry on its support for six months for this specific locality. It was learnt that a formal MoU will soon be signed.
